Students Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have a slow Internet connection, how do I download the higher
bandwidth/quality Windows Media file from the server to my hard drive before I view my class so I can watch it at the highest quality?

A: Connect to Blackboard and locate the lecture videos in your course documents. Right-click on the file name and select the "save target as" option. A box will pop up for you to choose where on your computer to save the file. Saving the file to your desktop makes it easy to locate after download. Double-click on the downloaded file to view the video with your Windows Media player. The file is very large and may take some time to download, but once you have downloaded it, the video should play normally as long as you have the current Windows Media player.

Q: I am an on-campus and my class is not online. How can I get a copy of a class that I missed/need to miss. How much does it cost, and whom do I call?

A: If your professor agrees, a copy of the lecture can be made for you. Please contact Marty Ronning in Rm 2104 Martin Hall.
Phone 301-405-4899 for more details.

Q: I know my class is captured and put on the server but only off-campus students are given access to them. Can I be given access to a single class that I missed?

A: You must request permission from your instructor to have access to restricted files. Your instructor may contact
it-support@umd.edu if he wishes to grant you access.

Q: My company has a firewall that prohibits me from accessing the online files. What are my options?

A: We will make copies of classes on CD for people with extenuating circumstances. Contact Marty Ronning at cronning@umd.edu or call
301-405-4899 to make arrangements.
